Sri Lanka has no dedicated digital nomad visa — here is what actually works
Let us be upfront: despite media coverage in 2023-2024 suggesting otherwise, Sri Lanka has not launched a dedicated Digital Nomad Visa as of 2026. The framework was announced but implementation stalled. Remote workers use one of three real options: the ETA tourist entry, a paid extension, or the Business Visa.
Most short-stay remote workers simply use the ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) and, if needed, extend it at the Department of Immigration and Emigration in Battaramulla.
Visa options at a glance
| Option | Duration | Income Requirement | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| ETA (tourist) | 30 days | None | USD 50 (double entry) |
| ETA Extension | +60 or +90 days | None | USD 100-200 at Immigration |
| Business Visa | 30-90 days | Sponsor letter | USD 70-200 |
| Residence Visa (investor/work) | 1+ year | Varies | Case-by-case |
ETA application process
Apply online for the ETA
Use the official eta.gov.lk portal. Fill in passport details, travel dates, and accommodation address. You need a passport valid for at least 6 months beyond entry.
Pay the fee
USD 50 for a standard tourist ETA (double entry, 30 days). Pay by credit or debit card on the official portal. Beware of third-party sites charging USD 80-150 for the same thing.
Receive approval
Most approvals arrive within 24-72 hours by email. Print a copy or save it on your phone. In practice the ETA is verified electronically at immigration, but a printout is a useful backup.
Fly into Colombo (CMB)
Arrive at Bandaranaike International Airport. Present your passport, printed ETA, and a completed arrival card. No further fees on arrival if you applied online.
Extend if needed
Visit the Department of Immigration in Battaramulla before day 30. Bring passport, onward ticket, proof of funds, and accommodation proof. Extensions of 60 or 90 days are routinely granted.
Cost and processing honestly
- Standard ETA: USD 50 for up to 30 days (double entry). Apply only at eta.gov.lk to avoid markup scams.
- Extension: Around USD 100 for 60 days, USD 200 for 90 days. Paid at the Department of Immigration in Battaramulla, Colombo. Take cash (LKR) and patience — processing takes 3-5 hours on-site.
- Maximum on tourist basis: Roughly 6 months in total (30 days plus two extensions) before you must leave and re-enter on a fresh ETA.
Business Visa option
If you are attending meetings, conferences, or have a local client, a Business Visa is more appropriate than a tourist ETA. Cost is similar (USD 70-200 depending on duration), but you need a local sponsor letter on company letterhead. It does not grant local employment rights — just business activity.
The gray zone for remote workers
Working remotely for non-Sri Lankan clients on a tourist ETA is a gray area, as in most countries. There is no active enforcement against laptop workers, but also no legal protection. Avoid mentioning “work” at immigration — you are a tourist planning to see Galle, Kandy, and the beaches.
Official resources
Apply through the Sri Lanka Department of Immigration and Emigration. Rules change — verify current requirements before booking flights. The 2026 status (no DNV in force) may change if the announced program actually launches.
