Istanbul café scene — 5 tested laptop-friendly spots
Istanbul has thousands of cafés but only a fraction welcome laptop workers for extended sessions. Traditional çay bahçesi (tea gardens) are for socializing, not typing. The specialty coffee wave that hit Karaköy and Kadıköy in the 2010s created a new class of work-friendly spots with fast WiFi and power outlets — focus your search there.
Expect to pay 50-120 TRY (EUR 1.50-3.50) per drink. Most cafés tolerate laptops on weekdays but some restrict them on busy weekends. WiFi speeds range from 30 Mbps at chain cafés to 150 Mbps at specialty spots that court remote workers.

Café etiquette in Turkey
Order at the counter in most specialty cafés. Table service is common at traditional places — wait for the waiter there. Tipping: round up or leave 10% for table service.
Time limits are rarely posted, but read the room. If every table is full on a Saturday afternoon, pack up your laptop. Weekday mornings (09:00-12:00) are the safest window for uninterrupted work. Some cafés in Cihangir and Karaköy actively welcome remote workers; others expect steady orders.
Keep headphones on and volume off. Speakerphone calls are considered rude — step outside or use earbuds.
Best neighborhoods for café-hopping
Karaköy — The densest concentration of specialty cafés in Istanbul. Walk along Mumhane Cd. and Kemankeş Cd. for 10+ options within 500 meters. Strong WiFi in most places. Downside: gets tourist-heavy on weekends.
Kadıköy / Moda — The Asian side’s café hub. Moda Cd. and the streets around Bahariye have 20+ cafés. Cheaper than the European side, younger crowd, fewer tourists. Take the ferry from Eminönü (25 min) or metro from Taksim via Marmaray.
Cihangir — Residential hillside neighborhood above Taksim. Quieter than Karaköy, with a handful of excellent work cafés on Akarsu Cd. Steep streets but rewarding Bosphorus views between buildings.
Skip Sultanahmet — Tourist pricing, weak WiFi, constant interruptions from touts. Not a single reliable work café in the old town.
