Internet in Stockholm — average 231 Mbps fixed broadband

Stockholm’s internet infrastructure ranks among the best in Europe. Fixed broadband averages 231 Mbps download and 168 Mbps upload, with fiber covering roughly 95% of the city. Mobile speeds average 110 Mbps on 5G networks, with 12 ms latency. You won’t have connectivity problems here — this is the country that built Spotify and Skype.

Most apartments come with fiber pre-installed. Cafes and coworking spaces typically offer 80–300 Mbps. Public WiFi exists in libraries, metro stations, and some parks, but speeds are inconsistent (20–50 Mbps). For reliable work, stick to your apartment connection or a coworking space.

SIM cards and eSIM for short stays

Buy a prepaid SIM at any Pressbyrån or 7-Eleven. Comviq is the cheapest option — SEK 100 for 6 GB valid 30 days. Telenor offers better speeds at SEK 200 for 20 GB. Both support 5G in central areas.

eSIM works with all three major carriers (Telia, Telenor, Tre). Activate online before arrival — no store visit needed. Tre’s eSIM unlimited plan (SEK 399/month) is the best value if you’re staying 2+ weeks and need reliable backup connectivity.

Registration requires a passport. EU citizens can use roaming under RLAH (Roam Like At Home) rules, but data caps apply after extended stays. If you’re here longer than 2 months, get a Swedish SIM.

Best-connected areas

Norrmalm and Vasastan — city center, full fiber coverage. Every café and coworking space has 100+ Mbps. T-Centralen station has free WiFi.

Södermalm — fiber throughout. The area around Medborgarplatsen and Nytorget has particularly strong coverage. Mobile signal holds even in basement cafes.

Östermalm — residential fiber widely available. Strandvägen and Karlaplan areas have excellent 5G coverage.

Avoid relying on mobile data on the archipelago ferries or in Djurgården’s park areas — coverage drops to 4G with 30–50 Mbps. Fine for browsing, unreliable for video calls.
