Tbilisi climate — continental with a Caucasian twist

Tbilisi sits in a river valley surrounded by mountains, and its climate reflects that. Summers are hot and dry (25-35°C in July and August), winters are cold-mild (-2 to 8°C December-February, rarely below -5°C), and spring and autumn are the sweet spots. Annual sunshine hours land around 2,200 — more than Berlin, less than Lisbon.

The city gets about 500 mm of rain spread mostly across April, May, and October. July and August are almost rain-free but intensely hot — the valley traps heat. Snow falls a few days per winter but rarely sticks on the streets; the surrounding mountains (Kazbegi, Gudauri) get heavy snow and are an easy weekend trip for skiing.

Best months for remote workers

May and September-October are the sweet spots. Temperatures between 14-20°C, enough sun for outdoor cafes, and the surrounding hills turn gold (autumn) or green (spring). Accommodation prices are 20-30% below the summer peak.

June is the last comfortable month before heat settles in. 20°C averages, long daylight until 20:30, and the wine regions of Kakheti are perfect for weekend trips. Book apartments early — June is increasingly popular with nomads.

July and August get hot — daytime temperatures hover around 30-35°C and the valley traps heat into the night. AC is non-negotiable in apartments. Many locals leave the city for Batumi (Black Sea coast) or the mountains. If you come in high summer, rent in Vake or Mtatsminda where elevation gives a few cooler degrees.

November-February is the off-season. Cheap rents (30-40% off summer rates), empty wine bars, and mild winters (rarely below -2°C in the city). Short daylight (sunset at 17:00 in December) and occasional rain, but the food scene is at its best and skiing at Gudauri is 2 hours away.

What to pack

Summer (Jun-Aug): Light, breathable clothing. Sunscreen. A water bottle — Tbilisi’s tap water is drinkable and cold from mountain springs. Bring swim gear for weekend trips to Lisi Lake or the Black Sea.

Spring/Autumn (Apr-May, Sep-Oct): Layers. Morning can be 8°C, afternoon 20°C. A light waterproof jacket covers the unpredictable April showers.

Winter (Nov-Mar): Insulated jacket, waterproof boots (old streets can be icy), scarf and gloves for December-January. Indoor heating varies — some older apartments have weak radiators. Ask the landlord about heating before signing in winter.

Year-round: Comfortable walking shoes. Tbilisi is hilly — Mtatsminda, Sololaki, and Old Town all involve stairs. A small daypack for cafe-hopping between specialty spots and coworking spaces.
