EUR 1,250-1,900/month — cheaper than mainland Spain
Tenerife is noticeably cheaper than Madrid or Barcelona. Rent is the biggest variable — mid-budget remote workers run comfortably on EUR 1,250-1,600/month, those wanting ocean views in Costa Adeje or central Santa Cruz can go to EUR 1,900+. Groceries, eating out, and transport are all 15-30% cheaper than mainland tier-1 cities.
The Canary Islands use their own reduced sales tax — IGIC at 7% instead of mainland VAT (IVA) at 21%. This ripples through restaurant, coffee, grocery, and retail prices. A cortado costs EUR 1.40 in Santa Cruz; EUR 2.20 in Madrid.

How to save money
Accommodation: look at Idealista and Fotocasa for 3+ month furnished rentals — 20-40% cheaper than Airbnb. Puerto de la Cruz runs EUR 200-300/month below Santa Cruz for equivalent apartments. Bonfim-equivalent budget plays: Tegueste (near La Laguna) and Icod de los Vinos.
Food: Hiperdino is the Canarian supermarket chain with the best prices. Mercadona is second. Avoid Carrefour for basics — 10-20% more expensive. Mercado Municipal Nuestra Señora de África in Santa Cruz for fresh fish and produce (Tue-Sun mornings).
Lunch over dinner: the menú del día at most local restaurants is EUR 10-14 for three courses plus drink. Same restaurant charges 30-50% more in the evening. Cook simple dinners, eat lunch out.
Transport: the Bono Residente card (if you stay 6+ months with padrón) cuts all TITSA buses and the Santa Cruz-La Laguna tram to roughly 50% — saves EUR 30-40/month. Without residencia, a regular Bonobus card still saves vs single tickets.
Coworking: monthly passes (EUR 150-220) beat day rates after 12-14 days of use. El Bloque in Puerto de la Cruz and The Box in La Laguna are the budget picks. See the coworking guide for the full list.

Currency and payments
Tenerife uses the Euro (EUR). Card acceptance is near-universal — contactless works in supermarkets, taxis, buses, and almost all restaurants. Carry EUR 20-30 cash for small bars, markets, and the occasional rural bakery.
ATMs are widespread; no Spanish-side fees for EU-issued cards. Wise and Revolut give the best exchange rates if you’re paid in USD, GBP, or non-EUR currencies. N26 and Openbank are solid for an EU-IBAN if you sign longer apartment leases.
If you apply for the Digital Nomad Visa, you’ll need an NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) and likely a Spanish bank account — Openbank and ING open accounts for non-residents online.
