Internet in Vienna — average 115 Mbps, fiber widely available

Vienna has strong broadband infrastructure. The city average sits around 115 Mbps download, with fiber (FTTH) available in most inner districts. Newer buildings in Leopoldstadt, Favoriten, and Donaustadt often come pre-wired for gigabit fiber. Older Altbau apartments in the 1st-9th districts may still rely on VDSL (50-100 Mbps), but Magenta and A1 are actively expanding fiber coverage.

Mobile data is fast and cheap. 5G covers most of the city center, with real-world speeds of 200-400 Mbps on A1 and Magenta networks. A prepaid SIM card works as a reliable backup — or even a primary connection for short stays.

Reliability

Very reliable — outages are rare

Provider Type Speed Note
A1 Fixed broadband + mobile up to 1 Gbps (fiber), 300 Mbps (5G) Austria's largest provider. Best fiber coverage. Prepaid SIM: 'A1 Go!' — 30 GB for EUR 15/month.
Magenta (formerly UPC) Fixed broadband + mobile up to 1 Gbps (fiber), 500 Mbps (5G) Strong in Neubau and Leopoldstadt. Cable network in older buildings. Prepaid: 'Magenta Mobil' — 20 GB for EUR 10/month.
Drei (3) Mobile + fixed wireless up to 300 Mbps (5G) Cheapest prepaid data: 'Drei Wertkarte' — 30 GB for EUR 12/month. Buy SIM at any Drei shop or Hofer.
HoT (Hofer Telekom) Mobile (MVNO on Drei) up to 150 Mbps Budget option at every Hofer supermarket. 30 GB for EUR 9.90/month. No contract required.

Tips for reliable connectivity

Buy a local SIM on arrival. Walk into any Hofer, Drei, or A1 shop with your passport. Activation takes 10 minutes. HoT via Hofer is the cheapest option and uses the Drei network. eSIM available from A1 and Drei — activate online before you land.

Test your Airbnb WiFi immediately. Run a speed test (fast.com) within the first hour. If speeds are below 30 Mbps, contact your host — many Altbau apartments have routers tucked in bad spots. Moving the router to a central room often fixes it.

Use your mobile as a hotspot backup. With 30 GB for EUR 10-15/month, tethering covers most work needs. Keep it ready for video calls if your primary connection drops.

Avoid free public WiFi for work. Wien.at offers free hotspots at major squares and transit hubs, but speeds are 5-15 Mbps and connections drop frequently. Fine for navigation, not for calls.

Best-connected areas

Innere Stadt (1st district): Full fiber coverage, most coworking spaces on gigabit connections. Dense 5G coverage from all three carriers.

Leopoldstadt (2nd district): Magenta fiber rollout is nearly complete. The area around Praterstraße and Taborstraße has the best coverage. WeXelerate coworking sits here with 300 Mbps.

Neubau (7th district): Mixed infrastructure — newer buildings have fiber, Altbau apartments may top out at 80-100 Mbps via VDSL. Coworking spaces (Impact Hub, mycowork) have dedicated business lines at 200+ Mbps.

Avoid relying on fixed broadband in far-out districts (21st Floridsdorf, 22nd Donaustadt suburbs, 23rd Liesing). Fiber is patchy, and VDSL speeds can drop below 30 Mbps. Mobile 5G works better there.
