Vienna climate — 1,900 sunshine hours/year, four distinct seasons

Vienna has a continental climate with real winters and warm summers. January averages -2C with occasional snow, July hits 21-26C. The city gets around 1,900 sunshine hours per year — less than Lisbon (2,800) but more than Berlin (1,600). Rain is spread evenly across the year, with July being the wettest month.

The key thing for remote workers: Vienna has 3-4 months of genuinely uncomfortable outdoor weather (December through February, sometimes March). If you plan a workation here, aim for May-September. The shoulder months (April, October) are hit-or-miss.

Best months for remote workers

May and June are the sweet spot. Temperatures sit at 16-20C, daylight lasts until 21:00, and the Donaukanal bars open for the season. Outdoor work is comfortable in cafes with terraces. Tourist crowds are manageable.

September is underrated. Temperatures drop to a pleasant 16C average, summer crowds thin out, and apartment sublets are easier to find as students return to their hometowns. The Weinwandertag (wine hiking day) in late September is a local highlight.

July and August are warm (21C+) but also the wettest months. Expect afternoon thunderstorms 2-3 times per week. Many locals leave Vienna in August, so the city feels emptier — good for focus, less good for networking.

Avoid December-February unless you enjoy dark, cold days. Sunset is at 16:00 in December. Temperatures hover around 0C. You will work indoors exclusively. The Christmas markets (Christkindlmarkt) are worth a visit, but not a reason to base yourself here in winter.

What to pack

May-September: Light layers, a rain jacket, comfortable walking shoes. Evenings cool to 12-15C even in summer — bring a light sweater. Sunscreen for outdoor cafe sessions.

October-April: Warm coat, thermal base layers, waterproof boots. Vienna’s cobblestone streets get slippery in rain and snow. A good umbrella is non-negotiable — the compact travel kind works fine.

Year-round tech: Austria uses Type C/F plugs (standard European two-pin). No adapter needed if coming from mainland Europe. UK and US travelers need a plug adapter. Voltage is 230V.
