Internet in Berlin — reliable but fiber coverage is patchy
Berlin’s average broadband speed sits around 80 Mbps. DSL and cable dominate most buildings; fiber (FTTH) is expanding but still limited to select neighborhoods. Coworking spaces typically deliver 150-300 Mbps. Mobile 5G coverage is solid in Mitte, Kreuzberg, and Friedrichshain — spotty in outer districts.
For remote work, Berlin’s internet is reliable enough for daily video calls and cloud workflows. The main risk is older buildings on slow DSL lines (16-50 Mbps). Always check the connection before signing an apartment lease.

Tips for reliable connectivity
Always have a backup. Get a prepaid SIM with data as a fallback — Aldi Talk (Telefónica network, EUR 8/month for 6 GB) or Fraenk (Telekom network, EUR 10/month for 8 GB). Tether your phone if your home connection drops.
Check before you rent. Run a Telekom or Vodafone address check before signing a lease. Many Altbau (pre-war) buildings max out at 50 Mbps DSL. Newer builds in Friedrichshain or Lichtenberg often have cable or fiber.
eSIM for travelers. If your phone supports it, grab an eSIM from Airalo or Holafly for the first days. Then switch to a local prepaid SIM from any Telekom or O2 shop.
Use a VPN on public WiFi. Cafe and coworking WiFi is usually open or shared-password. Run a VPN for anything sensitive. Mullvad (EUR 5/month) and Proton VPN are solid choices.
Best-connected neighborhoods
Mitte and Kreuzberg — Dense coworking and cafe infrastructure means you’re never far from 150+ Mbps. Most residential buildings have DSL or cable options.
Friedrichshain — Many newer or renovated buildings with cable internet (Vodafone). Good cafe WiFi along Boxhagener Platz and Simon-Dach-Straße.
Prenzlauer Berg — Reliable DSL coverage. Older Altbau buildings may cap at 50-100 Mbps. Coworking spaces fill the gap.
Avoid relying on WiFi in: Spandau, Marzahn, and outer Reinickendorf — infrastructure is thinner, and coworking options are scarce.
