USD 1,100/month — one of Asia’s best value workation bases
A solo remote worker in Canggu lives comfortably on USD 1,100 per month. Drop to USD 800 with a shared villa and warung-heavy diet, or climb to USD 2,000+ if you want a private pool villa in Berawa plus weekly massage treatments. Rent is the swing factor. The rest — food, coworking, transport — stays affordable even by Southeast-Asian standards.

How to save money
Accommodation: Monthly rates on Facebook groups (Canggu Community, Canggu Housing) beat nightly Airbnb by 40-60%. Walk the side streets (gangs) in Pererenan and Babakan — most villas have direct-owner signs in Bahasa and a quick WhatsApp negotiation. Paying three months upfront drops the price further.
Food: Warungs are 70% cheaper than Western restaurants and the quality is excellent. Warung Bu Mi, Warung Local and Warung Bu Made serve full plates for USD 2-3. Use Pepito Supermarket for groceries; Grab and GoFood deliver warung dishes for USD 3-5 all-in.
Transport: A monthly scooter rental at USD 60-80 covers everything. Petrol is USD 0.70 per litre. Avoid daily Grab car rides — they add up fast.
Coworking: Monthly passes (USD 100-140) beat day rates if you work more than 10 days. See Coworking in Canggu for picks.

Currency and payments
Canggu uses the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). USD 1 ≈ IDR 16,200 (April 2026). Cash still rules warungs, scooter rentals and smaller shops — withdraw IDR 2-3 million per week from a bank ATM (avoid standalone ATMs, which charge higher fees and occasionally skim cards). Contactless cards work at supermarkets and mid-range restaurants. Wise and Revolut both give near-mid-market exchange rates.
