Visa options for Canggu — tourist, visit visa, or the new remote-worker route

Indonesia now has three realistic routes for remote workers based in Canggu. Pick based on how long you plan to stay and whether your income sits abroad.

Visa on Arrival (VoA): 30 days, extendable once to 60 days. USD 35 on arrival. Fine for a short trial, not for a workation longer than two months.

B211A Visit Visa: 60 days, extendable twice to a total of 180 days. Applied for before travel through an Indonesian agent or e-visa portal. No formal income requirement but proof of funds (~USD 2,000) is standard.

E33G Remote Worker Visa: Launched late 2024. Allows up to 1 year for remote employees or freelancers working for foreign employers. Requires proof of USD 60,000 annual income and an employment/contract letter from a non-Indonesian entity.

Second Home Visa: 5 or 10 years for remote workers with IDR 2 billion (~USD 125,000) in a local bank account. Aimed at longer-term stayers, not typical nomads.

Application process (B211A — the most common route)

Step 1 (1-2 days)

Gather documents

Passport with 6+ months validity, passport photo, return or onward ticket, proof of funds (bank statement showing ~USD 2,000), travel insurance.

Step 2 (1-3 days)

Apply via agent or e-visa

Indonesian agents in Bali handle the paperwork for USD 150-250. The official e-visa portal (evisa.imigrasi.go.id) is cheaper (~USD 110) but requires a local sponsor.

Step 3 (5-15 working days)

Receive e-visa

Processing is 5-15 working days. You receive a PDF e-visa to print and show on arrival.

Step 4 (1 day)

Enter Indonesia

Show the e-visa at immigration. Stamp gives you 60 days from entry. Keep the arrival card — you need it for extensions.

Step 5 (5-10 working days per extension)

Extend (optional)

Visit an immigration office or use an agent before day 55. Each extension adds 60 days. Biometrics required on the first extension.

Costs and processing

  • B211A via agent: USD 150-250 all-in. Agents handle paperwork, biometrics, and pickup.
  • B211A via e-visa: USD 110 plus sponsor fee. Cheaper but more work.
  • Extension fee: USD 80-120 per 60-day extension via agent.
  • E33G Remote Worker Visa: USD 300-500 agent fee plus government fees.
  • Processing: 5-15 working days standard. Peak seasons (July-August, December) can push to 3-4 weeks.

Overstays are expensive — IDR 1 million (USD 60) per day — and can mean deportation plus a re-entry ban. Set a calendar reminder 10 days before each visa expiry.

Alternative options

Tourist VoA (30+30): Easiest for a short workation. Extend once at an immigration office (USD 25). Technically a tourist visa, so keep a low profile if you are working publicly.

KITAS (work permit): Requires an Indonesian company sponsor. Not relevant for most remote workers with foreign employers, but worth knowing if you plan to open a PT PMA (foreign-owned company) in Bali.

Social-cultural visa (visit visa for family/relationship): Similar to B211A but sponsored by an Indonesian family or partner. Same 60/180-day structure.

Rules change often — double-check with your agent or the official Indonesian immigration site before booking flights. See Cost of Living in Canggu for visa fees as part of the monthly budget.
